Why live-in care?
Live-in care is an affordable alternative to residential care. Having someone live-in with you provides both you and your family with the peace of mind that there is someone there to care and assist you as and when you need it.
Is live-in care right for me?
Live-in care allows you to remain in the comfort of your own home and to continue to do the things you want to do, when you want to do them. All of our staff respect that they will be living with you in your home and will support you to live your life, your way.
Will I have the same carer all of the time?
All of our staff need to take a break from time to time. Based on our experience, we find that live-in care works best when we find a small team of live-in care staff who work with you on a rotation basis. Through this approach we ensure there is familiarity and continuity in the people providing your care but also a variety of conversation and companionship.
What is the vetting process for care staff?
All staff are carefully chosen, fully referenced and will have been vetted via the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) – which includes a criminal record check – prior to starting with Domus Live-In Care.
Are the carers suitably qualified?
All of our care staff are trained to high standard which is in line with the full recommendations of the Care Quality Commission and Skills for Care. The training they receive includes infection control, food hygiene, assisting with medication and moving and handling as well as basic first aid. Some of our staff hold Diplomas in Health and Social Care and all are encouraged and supported to undertake a diploma study programme.
What are the carers allowed to do (and not allowed to do)?
The care staff are with you to support with all aspects of daily living including assisting with washing and dressing, medication, meal preparation and cooking, laundry and general domestic duties. They are also there to be a companion. However, if you would like them to decorate your house or give your garden a complete make-over, this would be outside of their area of expertise.
Can the carer cook for me?
Yes, all of our care staff can help with meal preparation and cooking.
Is there a minimum length of live-in booking?
The minimum length for a live-in assignment is usually 7 days, however, this can be discussed in more detail during the initial assessment.
What is the next step?
All you need to do is call us on 01892 512961 or e-mail us at [email protected] and we will be happy to discuss your needs and how we can support you.
How much will live-in care cost?
Domus is committed to providing excellent quality of care at an affordable price and the cost of care is subject to an assessment of your individual needs. Our live-in care service starts at £160 per day.
Is there a charge for the initial assessment?
We do not make any charge for the initial assessment. The purpose of the assessment is to discuss your individual needs to ensure we can provide the correct level of care and support.
What do I need to provide for my live-in carer?
They will need their own bedroom and have use of the facilities. It is not necessary for them to have a separate bathroom. Many of our live-in carers do appreciate access to a television and Wi-Fi. You will also be responsible for providing adequate nutritious food for the live-in carer. They will also need a two-hour break during the day, at a time convenient to you both, and should work an average of 8-10 hours per day providing care and support to you.
Are your live-in carers employed by Domus or self-employed?
We can provide both employed and self-employed care staff. Regardless of their employment status, we interview each of our care team, obtain references and an up-to-date DBS check as well as find out about their care experience, training and personality. Whether your care is provided by someone employed by Domus or by someone who is self-employed, the total amount you pay for your care is exactly the same.
What makes someone a successful Personal Care Assistant (PCA)?
Having the right attitude! Hard work, knowledge and skill are all important but without the right attitude, it is very unlikely that someone will succeed as a PCA. Care work is tough – it is emotionally, physically and mentally demanding but for those who have the right attitude, it is the most incredibly rewarding job.
What do live-in PCAs do?
Our PCAs live with our clients in their own home to provide the support they need to retain their independence. The type of support provided is wide-ranging and includes: helping with getting up and getting dressed; helping with showering, bathing and washing; helping with the preparation of meals; prompting, assisting or administering medication; helping with mobility which could include using equipment such as a hoist; general domestic tasks such as laundry, cleaning and shopping; assisting with going to the toilet or helping clients to manage their continence. In addition to the practical support, many of our clients also enjoy the companionship of having a PCA live-in with them and like to share stories, have a laugh and a bit of banter with their PCA.
Can I work on a self-employed basis?
Yes, you can either work on an employed or a self-employed basis with Domus. We can discuss the options at interview.
Do I need previous experience?
Whilst previous experience can be useful, it is not essential. All of our PCAs attend full training prior to starting work to ensure they have the knowledge and required level of skill to undertake the tasks required while on assignment.
Can Domus sponsor me for a work permit?
We do have a work permit sponsorship licence and we may be able to use this to enable you to join Domus and work in the UK.
